Meet Lara, one of our BIGKID beneficiaries. Since reigniting our music and creative arts programme, Lara has shone amongst others, not only with her amazing talent, but her resilient and hard-working approach to growing and making the most of her amazing gift.
“In November 2019 I was introduced to the BIGKID foundation by a friend and it’s really had a big impact on my music. I performed at a Christmas dinner they were hosting for BIGKID Foundation staff and youth. I was on edge, just because I didn't really know anyone and was about to sing in front of everyone... I really didn't want to make a fool out of myself considering it was the first time they were seeing me. However, once the day had come, I couldn't have felt more welcome and comfortable when performing. Everyone gave off a positive energy, as well as being extremely accepting.”
“Music has always been a big part of my life since I started YouTube. I began doing YouTube as a joke and thought nothing of it. I recorded my first video with a laptop camera, no instrumental, no filter, just me in my room with literally just lyrics and my voice. I have to admit, if I had to choose whether or not to post that first video, I would definitely still post it, even though it is possibly the worst video in the history of singing. It’s nice to see the development through the years and how my voice has changed. Other than YouTube I had never sung or performed in front of anyone... ever. During 2012 - 2018 it was just me singing to my camera and posting it online. My channel began growing in 2015, once I posted my first Portuguese video, reaching 100k views and my channel subs reaching 8k. Until then my biggest achievement was being recognised by the artists of the songs not once but twice. I was over the moon with everything that was happening during 2015. Eventually, in 2017 the hype went down as it always ends up doing, and I got used to it.”
“In the beginning of 2019, I had an opportunity to take part in a singing competition. I thought about it for a while before I decided to take part in it, keeping in mind it wasn’t in the UK. So, on the 13th of February 2019, I flew to Lisbon. The experience was amazing, and if I had to do it again I would...just better. My biggest struggle was dealing with my anxiety on stage. I think everyone takes “Anxiety” not so seriously, or when people do claim to have it, they’re attention seeking and that was something I surely didn't want anyone thinking then, or even now. The first couple seconds on stage I felt so many physical and emotional feelings rushing in all at once, I couldn't even think straight, but I pushed through it. I obviously didn’t make it through all the stages and so my journey in the competition ended. What I learnt from that experience was that not everything shown on TV is what happens backstage. There were several moments which were very eye opening. Not everyone is going to care about what you say or want to do, if it does not benefit them.”
Fast forwarding to my performance at BIGKID, since then I’ve been offered the help to work on my music journey, that I didn't know I needed, but I’m glad I have it now. Working with BIGKID in music has been a huge step for me. Witnessing how a blank piece of paper and a pen, with the right people, can turn into something great, can make a huge difference not only for me but for every other aspiring musician. I didn’t ever think that I would have done what I’m beginning to do right now if it wasn’t for BIGKID. It really is crazy to think about it, because looking back, 12-year-old me wouldn’t have guessed that I'd be a part of something so different and most certainly inspiring. 2020 couldn't have started better, I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
We are excited for what the future holds for Lara and our group of talented musicians. Helping to push them forwards and grab hold of whatever opportunities lie near or far in the future.
